Hazardous wastes are the most dangerous wastes as they contain properties that pose a danger to human health and/or the environment. Examples of hazardous waste include disposed fluorescent tubes, TVs, computer monitors, hospital and medical waste and even household batteries.
It is not always easy to assess which waste will present a hazard, as factors such as interaction with other substances play a part. The European Commission issued the European Hazardous Waste Directive, or HWD (91/689/EEC) to provide a European-wide definition of hazardous waste and to ensure the correct management and regulation of such waste across all its member countries. In July 2005 the Hazardous Waste (England and Wales) Regulations came into force to comply with HWD?s requirements. These Regulations set out procedures to be followed when disposing of, carrying and receiving hazardous waste anywhere in the UK.
The definition of hazardous waste affects how a company?s waste is regulated in terms of charging, monitoring and inspection. EnvirUP can help companies that produce, manufacture, dispose of and/or manage hazardous waste by advising them on how best to do it, to ensure they are complying with legislation.
