Climate Change Levy :

BACKGROUND
It is now widely accepted that carbon dioxide emissions caused by burning fossil fuels are leading to global warming. In an attempt to make businesses address this 'carbon risk', the UK government introduced the Climate Change Levy (CCL) in April 2001. The CCL is a tax paid by energy-demanding companies in proportion to their electricity, gas and fuel consumption. It provides companies with the financial incentive to reduce their waste and invest in a more efficient (and cheaper) energy source. This Levy forms an important part of the UK government's strategy to tackle man-made climate change in the near future.
The CCL package includes energy efficiency agreements with energy intensive sectors that could result in savings of 2.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year. The Levy is designed to have a neutral effect, through a reduction of 0.3% in employers National Insurance contributions. As part of their overall strategy, the UK government has made £150 million available to business for introducing energy efficiency measures, renewable energy sourced projects and the Enhanced Capital Allowance Scheme.

COST OF CLIMATE CHANGE LEVY PER KILOWATT HOUR:

The monetary value of the levy is dependant on the type of energy and is charged per kilowatt hour of energy consumed.

Energy Levy Increase in Value of Energy(approx)
Electricity 0.44 pence per kwh 10 - 20%
Gas 0.15 pence per kwh 15 - 20%
Goal 0.15 pence per kwh 15%
Liquid Petrolium Gas 0.07 pence per kwh 1%
The levy is shown on your business electricity bill before VAT.

TONNE OF CARBON DIOXIDE
It is very easy to be confused by all the figures. So imagine an average household's use of fossil fuel results in over 6 tonnes of carbon dioxide being emitted into the environment in a single year. This is heavier than the average family car.
