Green Index Ingredients

Green Index Categories Over a period of 6 months, we have independently scrutinised and examined the top 100 UK consumer brands. We developed a scoring methodology that consists of 48 environmentally-based questions, and each individual product has been marked against the same scale. An example of the key subject areas reviewed:

Company

  • Does the company have an environmental policy?
  • Does the company have any clear sustainability initiatives or policies?
  • Is the company using its resources to invest in community, social or charitable efforts?

Packaging

  • Is the product packed using one single material or many?
  • Does the packaging show any UK recycling symbols?
  • Does the packaging offer any suggestion on how to use the product in an environmentally friendly manner?

Product

  • Is there any evidence that the product is produced from sustainable resources?
  • Can the contents of the product contribute to a healthy lifestyle?
  • Does the content meet an important need?

Carbon

  • Has the manufacturer calculated the carbon footprint for their product portfolio?
  • Which greenhouse gases listed in the Kyoto protocol are the company tracking?
  • Does the company have a policy for minimising the use of water in it's business?

The methodology is unique, with a robust approach, and was reviewed by the University of Nottingham's Environment Technology Centre during its early development. Informed decisions were made based on publicly available information, such as on company or brand websites, or on the packaging itself. The data was then analysed extensively and the results made available within our easy to understand 'green index'. Each product is graded A (most green)-G (least green), depending on how well it has scored overall.
